Black Beyond Belonging Exhibit
I am excited to have work in the Black Beyond Belonging exhibit! It is a multi-artist, multi-space exhibition illuminating the significance of Black Art as a transformative agent in academic spaces. Anya Booker, the BAEC Lead Coordinator, raises a question in the form of a call to action:" How far does a Black student on this campus have to walk to see representations of themselves?" This exhibition responds to that call with a multigenerational presentation of 22-25 Black artists who interpret the mosaic of the Black experience through their work. Booker leads The Black Academic Excellence Center in inviting Sēpia Collective to create space for conversations acknowledging the challenges that Black students are experiencing in real-time.
The show also includes an off-campus digital exhibition to elicit a united interest in Black artists working in the NFT space. Sēpia Collective’s and BAEC’s goal is to help Black artists move their work into the digital NFT space as a collective endeavor while simultaneously propelling a deeper dialogue between the students on Cal Poly's campus. The digital work in the NFT exhibition will be for sale, with a portion of the proceeds going to Cakecutter Institute.
Cakecutter Institute is a nonprofit arts organization whose mission is to empower communities of color through the arts.
