EXHIBIT | Today Is A Great Day To Be You (Solo Show)

Hello! As you may know, I am currently exhibiting in my FIRST SOLO SHOW titled Today Is A Great Day To Be You, at Jubilee Arts in Baltimore, MD. Excited!!! The exhibit will be running until January 3, 2021.

THE ART.

It was pretty much impossible to get any good footage of the exhibit without the glare, but I still want to give an idea of what it looks like…

Below are images of the art on display and information about each of the pieces. You will also find “Her Story”, which are words either written by me or contributed and relate to the theme of the series…

Scroll all the way down and sign up for the mailing list to stay posted on when the prints dropping mid-January will be in the shop. (If you’re reading this from your phone, you may not be able to see the captions/links on the artwork. Also try turning your phone horizontal. May help.)

THE STORY.

The Today Is A Great Day To Be You exhibit is a celebration of our individuality. It is recognition of the fact that there is only one you with your exact gifts, your exact perspective, your exact experiences, your exact personality, your exact physicality. I think it is important that we own our stories – the good and the bad, because those experiences make us who we are.

This is what Unparalleled Art is all about. YOU are unparalleled art.

Everyone has a story. My art has always celebrated the beauty of black people. In more recent years, my focus has been highlighting the beauty and complexity of black women with a viewpoint towards growth and healing for all. The subject matter for each series I create is inspired by what I’m going through personally or things I am observing in the world that move me. I provide context by accompanying each piece with its own story. This story is either my own or a story someone else shares together with my art. It’s about the art of conversation. It’s about transparency…vulnerability. These are healing components. The painting is simply an illustration to a more meaningful story – yours and mine.

The ”Glory” series was inspired by a desire to celebrate black features, specifically our hair. It’s a theme I return to often, as I had my own struggle, in the past, with accepting my hair for what it is. The “Beautiful” series is inspired by the beauty of dark skin. Colorism, unfortunately, is still a thing. With this work, I celebrate the undeniable beauty of those rich in melanin. The “My Sunshine” series is about reverence, gratitude, and rest – themes from my 2020 existence and navigating this very interesting year we are having.

What are you grateful for? Who and what do you give your deep respect and devotion to? What brings you joy? These are some of the things I’ve thought about a lot in 2020. For all works, I used high-energy colors to represent the optimism and enthusiasm I feel and want to inspire with these series…and I just like bright colors. I also love to use plants and flowers in my work to symbolize growth and healing. With my newfound love of gardening, I imagine the type and intensity of plants involved in my art will only continue to increase.

The exhibit is still up and running until January 3rd. If you can, stop by and visit!!  There’s only one first. Don’t miss it if you don’t have to…history is happening lol. Thanks for stopping by!
